Today I had the honor of speaking with Kathryn Kvols, Founder of the International Network for Children and Families, and author of the book and course, "Redirecting Children's Behavior". Her strategies have empowered tens of thousands to redirect their kids' misbehaviour without nagging, yelling, or taking away privileges.
During our time together, we discussed specific strategies to eliminate the power struggles and conflicts which cause so much trouble in our lives. What impressed me most was that the strategies were based in kindness, firmness, boundaries and mutual respect.
The biggest challenge Kathryn and I talked about was that of listening. She expanded on the different forms of listening many adults model but don't like being on the receiving end of, like pretending we are listening, selective listening and defensive listening. Just being aware of this makes a world of difference in changing the dynamics of communication between adults and children.
